Mumwaldee, is that a preban Chinese? I took the spike off of mine recently because I've heard it's not legal on the ones imported after the ban. Little help here anyone?

Naturally, the issue is purposely complicated. I'm not sure when the ban on those dastardly spike-bearing Chinese SKS's began. You may be in the clear. My Dad was an FFL dealer who dealt primarily in SKS's and accessories for them. This was in the mid-nineties. The Chinese SKS's he purchased at that time did not have the bayonets attached, so I know they were a no-no by then. Perversely, some Romanian and Yugoslavian SKS's have been imported with bayonets since the "ban."

I'm not trying to bust your bollocks Mumwaldee. It just pays to be cautious, and perhaps another member here can chime in with additional, concrete information. When I used to help him at gunshows, my Dad made a point to ask various cops and ATF guys about the legality of modifying milsurp rifles. They didn't really know what was legit or not themselves, and I doubt that's changed.

My Dad used to have a totally tacticooled out SKS on the table back at that time, and there were no worries from Texas to Kentucky to California. It's just something to be careful about, just in case you run across someone who makes an issue of nothing.

I'd like to ask, how have others here fared with aftermarket SKS mags? We always found them to be junk (especially the drums), except for the ones from DC Engineering. I decided to just stick with the fixed mag, but I'm curious if others have had success replacing the fixed mag with aftermarket high capacity magazines. Honestly, the SKS market is riddled with complete garbage in the aftermarket.
